Connect Alt ("we," "our," "us") runs this website and its directory of events, programs, organizations and community posts, along with the emails we send. This notice explains what personal information we hold about you, why we hold it, who we share it with, and how you can see it, correct it, or have it deleted.
We wrote it in plain language on purpose. If any part of it is unclear, or if you would like it in another format, tell us using the contact details at the end and we will help.
Information we collect
We only collect what the site needs to work for you:
- Account and profile: your email address (your password is handled by our sign-in provider and is never visible to us), your name or first name, and the preferences you choose — city, state, ZIP code, how far you are willing to travel, and your interest categories. Sharing your location is optional: you can check "I prefer not to share my location" and we store none of it.
- Your activity in your account: the events, programs and organizations you save or follow, and the events you RSVP to.
- Community board posts: the title, description, price, condition and location you write, plus the contact name, email address and optional phone number you enter. This information is published on the board and can be read by anyone who visits the site. Only post what you are comfortable sharing publicly.
- Submissions: when you submit an event, program, organization or article, we keep what you submit together with your name and email address so we can check it and follow up with you.
- Messages you send us: the contact form, reports, comments and suggestions (including a suggestion typed during profile setup) are stored with your name and email address so we can reply.
- Email list: your name and email address, who referred you if you name them, how you heard about us, and whether you have opted out of emails.
- Usage information: which pages, events and organizations are viewed, what is searched for, and which links are clicked. These records are tied to a random session identifier, not to you; if you are signed in we also record the city and state from your profile so we can see which areas are served well.
- Technical logs: our hosting provider keeps standard server records (such as IP address, browser and device type, and time of access) to keep the site running and secure.
What we do not collect: we do not ask for medical or disability details, we do not collect payment card numbers, we do not run third-party advertising trackers, and we do not profile you for advertising.
How we use your information
- To build the personalized feed, recommendations and weekly roundup you asked for.
- To send the emails you subscribed to, and to process unsubscribe requests.
- To publish and manage the content you post or submit, and to check listings before or after they go live.
- To answer your messages and requests, including accessibility questions.
- To credit referrals in our giveaway, and to administer the giveaway and its rules.
- To understand which events, programs and organizations are useful so we can improve the directory.
- To keep the site safe, prevent abuse, and meet our legal obligations.
How long we keep information
- Profile and account information is kept while your account exists.
- Community board posts stay until you close or delete them, or ask us to.
- Email list entries are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you.
- Messages and submissions are kept as long as needed to handle them and to keep a record of the listings we publish.
- Usage records are kept in a form that does not identify you.
When you ask us to delete your account, we remove your profile, saved items and email-list entry. We may keep de-identified usage counts, and we may keep a minimal record where the law requires it.
Your choices and rights
- Unsubscribe: every member email has an unsubscribe link, or you can email us and we will remove you.
- See and correct: your profile details (name, location, interests, notification choices) can be changed at any time in your account settings, and we will help if anything looks wrong.
- Delete: you can delete your account from your account settings, or ask us to delete specific information such as a board post or an email-list entry.
- Choose what you share: location sharing is optional, and phone numbers on board posts are optional.
- Access and portability: on request we will tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy.
- California residents: you have the right to know the categories of personal information we collect and how we use it, to request deletion or correction, and to be free from discrimination for exercising these rights. We do not sell or share personal information for money or for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not use sensitive personal information for any purpose beyond providing the service. Subscribing to our list and referring a friend are voluntary, and the giveaway entry you receive for doing so is not payment for your personal information.
To make any of these requests, use the contact details below or the Contact page on this site. We may ask you to confirm that the request comes from you, and we will respond within the time the law allows.
How we protect information
We use administrative, technical, and physical security measures to help protect your personal information. Access to member data is limited to the administrators who need it to run the directory and the emails. While we have taken reasonable steps to secure the personal information you provide to us, please be aware that despite our efforts, no security measures are perfect or impenetrable, and no method of data transmission can be guaranteed against any interception or other type of misuse.
Children's privacy
Our services are not intended for children under the age of 13, and accounts are not available to them. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under age 13 without verification of parental consent, we will take steps to remove that information from our servers. Some listings we publish describe youth programs; those listings come from the organizations that run them, not from the children themselves.
